Prevention

Prevention is at the centre of everything we do at Dentist Rathmines: we want to help you have healthy teeth for life.

Dental Hygiene at home
Regular tooth brushing and flossing are the basic requirements for healthy gums, teeth and a fresh breath.
In order to keep your gums healthy you need to remove the daily build up of plaque from all the surfaces of your teeth by -
  • Brushing your teeth twice a day, for two minutes each time. Ask us which type of tooth brush is best for you, as many of us use brushes that are too hard or too large.
  • Floss your teeth or use interdental brushes as a toothbrush doesn't always reach into the gaps in between the teeth or below the gum line.
  • Do not brush your teeth too hard as this can damage your gums,we will show you the correct technique
  • Use fluoride toothpaste

 Diet
Sugars and particularly carbohydrates are a major cause of tooth decay. The most important point is to limit the number of times any item of food or drink makes contact with your teeth. Thus all foods should be consumed during meal times only and avoid sugary snacks between meals.
Tooth surface loss due to acidic foods and drinks is also a major concern today. Please ask us for advice if you feel your teeth are affected by tooth erosion.

Fluoride
Use of toothpaste with fluoride is one of the major factors why people today have less tooth decay.

Smoking and Oral Health
Patients who smoke are far more likely to suffer with more severe gum problems. Smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream. This has the adverse effect on the healing process, so infection in the gums and following tooth extractions are more likely. Smoking is also a major risk factor for cancer of the mouth and throat.
